Middletown has renamed Veterans Park, a township park on Brownsville Road, Simmons Park in honor of Marine Lance Cpl. Harry J. Simmons Jr. The township resident was killed in action in 1967 during the Vietnam War.

The township supervisors approved the name change at their Tuesday night meeting. They said it was a good way to honor a heroic Marine and it also made sense because the site of a future township veterans memorial adjacent to the public works complex on Veterans Highway (Route 413) is also known as Veterans Park.

According to the name-change resolution, Simmons was fatally wounded on April 18, 1967, while helping an injured comrade board an evacuation helicopter. He won seven medals for his military service, the resolution read.

“I am so honored by this,” Simmons' sister Sandra Giangrante, said at Tuesday's meeting.
“As we all know, freedom is not free, but is paid for by the men and women in our military service,” the Lower Makefield resident added...
