Tree honors six unreported casualties

HELENA — Six more Montanans than generally realized have been killed overseas since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the United States, a memorial tree in the state Capitol shows.

The tree, put up by a Dillon woman determined to see Special Operations forces recognized, names the 14 Montanans publicly listed, as well as six other men.

"You have your Vietnam veterans' wall and your World War II veterans' wall, and Special Forces are never included," said Joan Grogan of Dillon who designed the Gold Star tree that sits in the Capitol's Reception Room, just outside Gov.
